The Battle for the Chin Dynasty
What is a Double Chin?
Fat deposits that accumulate around the neck cause sagging beneath the chin, leading to a condition that most of us know as a “double” chin. It can occur in anyone, male or female, and at any age.
What Causes a Double Chin?
- Weight loss: Losing weight rapidly can result in loose skin under the chin as well as anywhere else on the body. Skin that previously accommodated a larger volume of fat will sag once that fat volume is gone.
- Weight gain: An increase in fat deposits due to weight gain can be located anywhere on the body. Your particular “fat” destinations are more likely a result of your genetics—you may show added weight more in your abdomen than your chin or vice versa.
- Age: Although younger people can have a double chin due to genetics, the problem is more common as we grow older, because the muscles weaken with age, leading to sagging in the skin.
- Genetics: As mentioned above, you may be the recipient of a genetic disposition to a double chin and, therefore, have had this condition most of your adult life.
- Bone structure: Individuals with a jaw that protrudes down the chin have a “natural” double chin. Those with a wider jaw often do not have a double chin, like those with a muscular structure in the jaw that makes double chin formation less likely.
- Obesity: Overweight individuals tend to have double chins more often than those who are thin.
How Can You Get Rid of Your Double Chin?
There are three treatments to eliminate double chin. They are:
- Kybella, a new injectable
- CoolScupting®, which eliminates fat via controlled cooling
- Liposuction, which removes the fat via suction
Kybella is an FDA approved injectable that has recently appeared on the market and is touted as the latest and best non-surgical method to treat double chin. It runs $600 per vial, requires two vials, on average, per treatment and four to six treatments over a period of several months. I offer Kybella for those who want it, but I cannot make any guarantees that it works, as I’m not convinced that it does.
CoolSculpting® removes fat via a “freezing” technology by placing a handpiece over the area in which you want the fat to dissipate. It’s most often used on the abdomen, love handles, back or thighs, but the newly introduced “Cool Mini” can be used on the chin with an average loss of about 1/8” per treatment. Among surgeons who use the Cool Mini for the chin area (and Columbus is the closest city where you can get this), each treatment costs from $900 to $1200 and most patients require two treatments separated by a 4-6 week period. I don’t offer CoolSculpting.
Liposuction is a one-time, outpatient procedure that, here in my Dayton cosmetic surgery practice, runs $1200 for a double chin.
So, you can easily see, the choice is yours:
- Inject several times for an average investment of $4800 to $6000 and hope that it works;
- “Freeze” several times for an average cost of $1800 to $2400;
- Liposuction once for $1200.
